Belemy was hit by a car and the driver never stopped to help her. Fortunately, another driver saw this happen and scooped up Belemy and brought her to Memphis Animal Services. Belemy was brought to MAS Thursday, October 12, 2023. Belemy was a deadline dog at risk of euthanasia after three days of her arrival. Belemy is only 1.5 years old.
Belemy could not walk or move in her kennel. No one at the shelter noticed Belemy had an extremely deep wound on her front leg. Her soon to be foster mom, Natalia Nazareth, saw Belemy and fell in love with her. Natalia noticed the large wound on Belemy's front leg and requested an exam. The MAS vet finally examined Belemy October 16, 2023, over 4 days later. Belemy suffered alone in pain with a broken front leg sitting in her kennel at the shelter.
Natalia jumped at the opportunity to foster Belemy despite having several pets of her own. Natalia reached out to The Savior Foundation for help with her medical treatment. Because Natalia and The Savior Foundation agreed to partner together, Belemy was rescued from the shelter and able to begin the critical treatment she desperately needs!
Germantown Parkway Animal Hospital worked Belemy into their busy schedules due to her critical condition. Dr. Angie Zinkus operated on Belemy in every effort to save her leg. Unfortunately, the break in Belemy's leg was too old to repair. Her muscles and ligaments were too constricted and damaged. Belemy would need an amputation. On a positive note, x-rays and a thorough examination by Dr. Zinkus revealed Belemy's back leg was healthy and intact.
We also discovered Belemy was heartworm positive!
Belemy arrived for her amputation and her pre-surgical bloodwork revealed a very high white blood cell count. Belemy ended up having a severe upper respiratory infection. Her surgery was cancelled and she was immediately put on antibiotics. Belemy's surgery is rescheduled and will occur if her infection is gone. We are currently treating her infection and waiting for test results. We will then move forward with her amputation, so she can be pain free and be able to move around again.
Currently, Belemy's medical bills totaled over $2500 and she still needs the amputation and heartworm treatment. Please consider making a donation so we can continue with her critical treatments. Belemy is a very sweet dog, who is very gentle and loves to cuddle. Belemy deserves to be pain free and live a happy, healthy life.
